Top Tips to Reduce Eye Strain from Electronic Devices

Smart phones and tablets have become a staple in today’s modern society. Whether you’re using it for business or just for pleasure, these devices are being stared at for long periods without a break.

With that being said, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that staring at a screen for hours at a time can cause dry eyes, irritation, eyes contacts or migraines. Fortunately, there are some steps that you can take to reduce the amount of pain your eyes are going through.

Take Breaks

One of the easiest, and most straightforward, tips is to take a break and limit the amount of time you spend on your electronic device. The next time you reach for your phone, try to be aware of the time and take a break every once in a while. For some people, a simple task like responding to an email can turn into hours of browsing social media.

Increase Your Viewing Distance

You may not notice it, but you might be staring at your phone closer than you should. Try and increase the distance between your eyes and the screen. Studies have shown that the eyes become more irritated the closer you get towards the screen. If you cannot comfortable view your monitor or screen at a safe distance, it might be time to give the optometrist a call so you can get some new glasses or contacts lenses.

Use Lubricated Eye Drops

Rather than constantly rubbing your eyes every time it feels dry, take some lubricated eye drops and put a dab in each eye. The friction of your hand against your eyes doesn’t just irritate them even more, but the bacteria on your hand can cause your eyes to become infected.
